Municipalities are central players in the energy transition, but they still lack a simple and comparable way to assess their energy performance. Information on energy consumption in buildings, mobility, and economic activity is scattered, making it difficult to obtain an integrated view of the urban reality.
To address this gap, INEGI, within the scope of the ATE Agenda, is developing the Urban Energy Performance Label. The main factors influencing energy consumption in cities have already been identified and an initial list of 115 indicators has been developed, organised by areas such as buildings, energy and territory, and economic activity. These indicators have been linked to official data from INE, ADENE, DGEG and the European Commission, and the process of collecting, validating and preparing the information that will form the basis of the assessment model is underway.
The ultimate goal is to provide, from June 2026 onwards, a practical and reliable tool to help local authorities assess their energy performance, monitor their progress and support strategic decisions at local level on the path to energy transition.
