A new solution is being developed in the Port of Aveiro that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project is called EnergyHub and is part of the ATE Agenda and the decarbonization strategy of the Port Administration of Aveiro (APA).
The idea is simple: to provide electrical energy from land to the ships docked in the port, avoiding the use of their own fossil fuel generators. This makes the port cleaner, more efficient, and environmentally sustainable.
The project is the result of a joint effort between INESC TEC, the University of Coimbra, and INEGI, in collaboration with the APA.
INESC TEC is developing a smart digital platform to manage energy in the port, based on real-time data collected by smart meters, integrating local renewable sources. The platform will also incorporate information on fuel consumption, water usage, and emissions, and will include a tool to calculate the environmental impact of the different phases of port operations.

The University of Coimbra is developing a modular and adaptable OPS (Onshore Power Supply) system prototype, which simulates the supply of electricity to ships from land. In an advanced testing phase, the system collects data for efficient energy management, can connect to the electrical grid and utilize renewable sources, operating with different types of vessels.

In turn, INEGI is creating a prototype of a modular container that will house the power supply system. This container is being produced with recyclable materials and ecological solutions, and it was designed to be easy to transport, install, and adapt to the demanding conditions of a port environment, such as humidity and salinity.

The EnergyHub will be demonstrated at the Port of Aveiro, validating its operation in a real port ecosystem. Meanwhile, important improvements are being made to the port’s electrical network to enable the installation and functioning of the OPS system.
With this initiative, the EnergyHub strengthens the role of the Port of Aveiro as a benchmark in the decarbonisation of the port sector, and confirms the ATE Agenda as a key piece in the energy transition in Portugal.
